The Delhi Public Library (DPL)

The Delhi Public Library (DPL) was established in 1951 by then Ministry of Education, Government of India with financial and technical assistance from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Delhi Public Library was started as a Pilot Project of UNESCO. The Delhi Public Library (DPL) was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru on 27th October 1951.

At present, the Delhi Public Library is functioning under the administrative control of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Its Headquarter is located in Chandni Chowk opposite Old Delhi railway station. The Delhi Public Library (DPL) provides free library services to the children, and adults irrespective of any distinction of sex, caste, creed, and religion.

Services provided by The Delhi Public Library (DPL)

DPL provide the following services to the users: 

  • Reading Room Services 
  • Free Internet Services 
  • Free Self Study Room Facility. 

Publications of DPL

Delhi Public Library publishes a Quarterly magazine in Hindi named “Bhartiya Lok Dipika to introduce writers to the readers and to inform readers about different subjects and issues.

Delhi Public Library publishes magazine “Smarnika” on the major programs and activities organized by the Social Education Department of Delhi Public Library.
