The Library Association (LA)
The LA is the oldest and most important library association in the UK.
Founded in 1877, the Association is headquartered in London.
In April 2002, it merged with the Institute of Information Scientists (IIS) to form the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).
Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP)
CILIP was formed in April 2002 by the Union of the Institute of Information Scientists (IIS) and the Library Association (UK).
The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA)
It was established in 2000 by absorbing the Library and Information services Council
It is funded by the DCMS. MLA is a non-departmental public body.
British Library
The British Library is the national deposit library of the UK.
The Library was established in 1973 on the recommendations of Dainton Report and passing of the British Public Library Act 1972.
American Library Association (ALA)
American Library Association is one of the oldest, largest and leading professional associations of the library and information sciences.
ALA was founded in 1876 and founder members were: Melvil Dewey, Charles Ammi Cutter, Justin Winsor, Samuel S. Green, Fred B. Perkins, Charles Evans, Thomas W. Bicknell, and James L. Whitney.
Its headquarters is in Chicago.
The purpose of ALA is ‘to promote library service and librarianship’.
Public Library Association (PLA)
Public Library Association was founded in1944
It is a division of the American Library Association.
PLA has more than 9000 members
Urban Libraries Council (ULC)
Urban Libraries Council (ULC) founded in 1971.
It is a membership association of leading public library systems in the US and Canada.
Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) was established in 1996
It is an independent agency of the United States.
This institute works at national level and promotes libraries and museums.
Library of Congress
The Library of Congress is one of the largest libraries in the world.
It was instituted for the Congress in 1800.
It is Located in Washington D.C.
Library of Congress is deeply involved in various projects and standards, such as: MARC 21 Format, MARC XML, Metadata Object Description Standard (MODS), Metadata Authority Description Standard (MADS), Z39.50, ISO 639-2, etc.
New York Public Library (NYPL)
It is the second largest public library in the USA and third largest library in the world.
It was established in 1895.
Canadian Library Association (CLA)
Canadian Library Association (CLA) was founded in 1946.
It was incorporated under the Companies Act on November 26, 1947.
It is a not- for –profit, voluntary and national organization for the library community in Canada.
Canadian Association of Public Libraries (CAPL)
Canadian Association of Public Libraries (CAPL) was founded in June 1972.
It is a division of the Canadian Library Association.
Library and Archives Canada (LAC) (National Library of Canada)
The National Library of Canada was established in 1953 by an act of parliament and located at Ottawa.
It was merged with the National Archives of Canada in 2004 and renamed as “Library and Archives Canada.
